Fishing News
Approximately 80 people both male and female are on our books solely as fishing members. Trailable fishing boats may also be admitted to our register, although we try to keep the numbers down due to restricted parking facilities. At present there are about 30 trailables on the register. We also have a slip which is available to members only. For details on becoming a member please go to the Membership page.
Fishing Report 9-09
The gale-force winds during the past two months have curtailed the bay fishing with very few members venturing out. Lee McKenzie fished Ken Patchett’s deep mark twice without success. Ken, incidentally, was fishing in North Queensland at this time, also without success.
Paddy Garritty also tried the cockle beds and the Port Melbourne marks with no result. With the turbulence caused by the bad weather and big seas the Williamstown foreshore has become a haven for marine life. Seals and dolphins have been regular visitors to the Club area, swimming around and through our jetties while good catches of pinky snapper have been reported at the Workshop Pier (keep away from the Couta Boats, they bite back!) and around the yacht club marinas.
Our own jetties have also provided some sport with the odd fish caught during the day. On one occasion there appeared to be a fishing competition with Joe Ritchie, Lee McKenzie, Joe Nettleton, Bill Pride and “Lost Rod” Wally Curran trying their luck along our piers. Wally was the winner: the only one who caught a fish! Hans Schepers and Roger Hansen have also been regular triers using plastic but it would seem that skills with lures is still not the answer and we continue to depend on lots of luck. No reports yet of the big reds coming into the Bay but there are still a few weeks to go before Show Day.
