Novice Sailing

(See Calendar at bottom of page)

Any persons new to or inexperienced in sailing are given opportunities throughout our sailing season to improve their sailing skills through our supported programs, which are free and open to WSC members and to visitors to the Club. These activities are best suited to our Learn to Sail graduates - up to three years post-graduation, and to the more confident Junior Fleet sailors.

Members may hire a Club’s Pacer or provide their own boat. Information about hiring a Club Pacer can be found here.

Any private boat participating in our social sailing programs must have a Safety Declaration lodged for it. In addition, if the private boat is to be used in a Club racing series or in a Club training program, then it must be covered by a minimum of $10,000,000 third-party liability insurance and a copy of the insurance certificate must also be lodged with the Club. Instructions on how to lodge these documents can be found here.

Green Fleet

Our Green Fleet is designed for novice sailors to compete against sailors of a similar standard. Green Fleet is Division 5 in our Saturday Series Races and sailors may sail a modified course. Green Fleet will run only when the weather is favourable for novice sailors.

Supported Green Fleet Race (SGFR)

Supported Green Fleet Racing (SFGR) will run on selected Saturdays as part of our Saturday racing series, with participants being in Division 5. Participants will be given additional support and guidance pre-, during and post-race. When SGFR occurs on two-race days, it will operate only during the first race.

The timing of the SGFRs follows our Learn to Race (LTR) course as a natural progression to the next level of sailing; however, participation in our LTR is not a prerequisite for participating in this event.

There will be a rescue boat dedicated to following the SGFR participants during the race.

Adventure Sail

Our Adventure Sail takes novice sailors over to the other side of the bay where they land on a beach. Bring some money for a coffee; children will have time to play on the beach. This activity is supported by a rescue boat and experienced sailors.

Friday evening racing series

Novice sailors are encouraged to participate in our Friday Evening Racing series which races on the Club side of the Channel. See Friday evening racing for further details.
