Vale Michael Virant

Published Wed 14 Oct 2026

We are all very much saddened by the loss of our fellow member and friend Michael. He loved the Williamstown Sailing Club, and his significant contributions such as the replacement of the railway tracks for the slipway, the restoration of the mooring pontoon, and the many electrical works that he undertook, as well as his time on the Committee of Management as a Flag Officer and ordinary member, form part of his legacy.

Last year, in recognition of his outstanding commitment and dedication to our club, Mike was awarded one of the Hobsons Bay Volunteers of the Year, presented by the Honorable Melissa Horne MP.  He gave his time so generously and was a well-liked 'Lollipop Man' at the North Williamstown Bayside Campus School Crossing and a volunteer bus driver for aged care residents, driving them to the supermarket and on other outings. A passionate and adventurous traveller who planned his trips meticulously and often quoted his motto 'adventure before dementia' with a wry chuckle.

Rest in peace, Michael; you will be very much missed by members at the Williamstown Sailing Club.

Condolences to Michael's family and friends.

Allan O'Brien,
Commodore, on behalf of the WSC Committee of Management.
