A message to all members from the Commodore
- Racing calendar postponed.
- Social and Club events cancelled.
- Individual access to the Club can continue for the interim.
- Follow government health guidelines.
The Committee of Management has been urgently considering the implications of the recent COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak for our Club. Over the weekend we saw major sporting and cultural events cancelled in response to the Prime Minister’s decision to adopt medical advice that non-essential gatherings of more than 500 people are not to take place.
This advice, which was based on the recommendation of the Chief Medical Officer, recognises that the rate of COVID-19 transmission in our community is growing and that there is a need to take unprecedented action to protect the health and wellbeing of the community. Because the situation is evolving rapidly, we are also working on the basis that there will be further restrictions recommended by the Chief Medical Officer that will impact the community and may require more controls or restrictions on the community and our Club in the near future.
All our advice has been to take strong action early. The expert advice is that, given our size and the demographic of our membership, we will almost certainly see several members potentially affected from this virus. If we take hard decisions now, the expectation is that we can significantly reduce the potential for this number to be higher. This is what The Committee of Management are committed to achieving.
We at WSC have posted the Government approved posters around club on how to spot the signs of COVID-19 and what steps to take to minimise infection. We will ensure soap is plentiful; remove any towels and replace with disposable towels and will provide hand sanitizers to bar and canteen as supplies become available.
We are postponing all social events including presentation night for the interim. We are also postponing club activities including the remainder of the racing calendar, Tackers families and junior sailing until further notice. We are hopeful that we may be able to extend the sailing season once the situation has been normalised, if possible and will keep you informed.
At this stage, this will not preclude individual members utilising the Club facilities for fishing, sailing, kayaking or indeed individuals use of the upper deck. The health and wellbeing of our members and visitors is paramount, therefore, to minimise the risk of COVID-19 spreading, please follow all of the recommended hygiene practices and ensure you are familiar with the latest government advice.
We shall keep you informed of news regarding this situation in relation to the Club, as it arises.
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
